The “Social Audio” competition is heating up

April 23, 2021

We know the Clubhouse app is quite buzzy. But as more people get introduced to the “social audio” experience that Clubhouse has helped make so popular, the competition is heating up.

Several established platforms already offer voice-only experiences (most notably Twitter Spaces) as well as similar, video experiences (see Instagram Live).

Here are a few other entries to the space to keep an eye on:

Facebook

Facebook recently outlined several projects in the work based on audio experiences, including:

  • A “sound studio” mixing experience for making better audio recordings.

  • A new feature called Soundbites is aimed at capturing and sharing “short-form, creative audio clips for capturing anecdotes, jokes, moments of inspiration, poems, and many other things we haven’t yet imagined.”

  • Podcasts

  • Live Audio Rooms in Facebook and FB Messenger

^ That last one is the Clubhouse experience. :) Expected to launch by the summer, Live Audio Rooms will be rolling out within Facebook Groups as a way to host audio conversations.

Reddit

As reported by Mashable, Reddit is ”quietly exploring a new feature that would enable moderator-run voice chats.”

The new (unconfirmed) feature could be part of Reddit’s power-ups program, which will allow subreddits to gain additional features if its members buy a certain number of add-ons.

Twitter

As we have already mentioned, Twitter’s Spaces feature is gaining steam. Hosting capabilities should be available to all users any day now. Twitter has also made its Spaces functionality available to Android users—filling a void left by Clubhouse still only being available on iOS.

Clubhouse

With all of this competition increasing, Clubhouse has acknowledged that it has several challenges. In a recent Townhall, co-founder Paul Davison explained that it will be working on improvements to user experience, notification control, and personalization, as well as rolling out on Android.

The company has recently gained new investments and a $1 billion valuation.
