Following the recent acquisition of the Dutch newsletter tool Revue, Twitter has begun rolling out a direct integration with Twitter.
Users who start composing a threaded Tweet are seeing a notification (see screenshot below) to learn more about the tool. As reported in TechCrunch, some users are also seeing a new “Newsletters (BETA)” tab with similar messaging.
The integration is being marketed as a way to make “Twitter a better home for writers.”
The primary offering is a paid newsletter subscription product with a low fee (5%). Twitter also says that Revue’s pro features will be free for all Twitter accounts.
Additional features of the Revue newsletter service include data portability (take your subscribers with you), a profile page, subscriber management, insights, and others.
Want to try it out for yourself? For now, the features are only available via desktop web interface (not mobile apps). Once you sign up on the Revue site, you’ll be able to set up a free profile and start designing a newsletter. Then you can explore billing options, subscriber user flow, and more. (Check out this guide from Social Media Examiner for more tips.)
Additional functionality will be coming in the future, too. It’s a bit vague, but Twitter said they’re “imagining a lot of ways” to make it easy for writers and publishers to grow their brands on Twitter, “from allowing people to sign up for newsletters from their favorite follows on Twitter, to new settings for writers to host conversations with their subscribers. It will all work seamlessly within Twitter.”
The potential to directly integrate a newsletter into a social media strategy has a lot of potential to both make life easier for those publishing content, and to make Twitter a more attractive channel for those publishers to deciding where to invest time and advertising dollars.
It’s worth noting that Facebook has also been in the news for planning similar newsletter offerings (though theirs may be focused more on Groups integration—also a compelling thought!)
