To build a new revenue stream and to incentivize top users to post more frequently, Twitter is working on several subscription products.
According to Bloomberg, payment options being explroed include:
Exclusive content – Users would pay (or “tip”) selected accounts for exclusive content, similar to a subscription service.
Apps – This would involve paying for the use of services aimed at power users, namely Tweetdeck.
Advanced consumer features – Could this be where Twitter will finally allow for an “undo send” setting?! Other options might include custom colors, hashtags, stickers, and other profile enhancement features.
Ad-free feed – Would users pay for Twitter without the ads? (From the reporting, this sounds like the least likely outcome.)
Higher-quality video – An idea targeted toward video creators who may want to upload better/longer clips.
Analytics – Depending on the price, advanced Twitter data could be a worthwhile investment for many users/companies.
Verification – Another one that sounds unlikely, but the option is there.
These possibilities come following a number of interesting developments at Twitter, including investor pressure on CEO Jack Dorsey and the recent acquisition of the subscription newsletter service Revue. The news about Revue seems like a natural fit for Twitter’s code-named “Rogue One” project, which is researching potential subscription offerings.
Social media depends on ads to stay profitable, so to see a major platform considering a new revenue stream deserves some attention. It’s a risky bet, but could it be just what Twitter needs?
It could definitely backfire, especially if rival websites offer similar features for free. But the company seems to be emphasizing due caution:
“We have a really high bar for when we would ask consumers to pay for aspects of Twitter.” —Twitter Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal
For now, we will have to wait and see if any of this comes to fruition.
