Facebook Campus - A separate, student-focused Facebook

September 18, 2020

This might sound familiar: A new, college-only space has been designed “to help students connect with fellow classmates over shared interests.” Meet Facebook Campus.

Why does this sound so familiar?

You might remember that the original Facebook was reserved for those with college (.edu) email addresses at universities like Harvard. So this new section of Facebook is certainly a return to its roots.

Here’s how Facebook Campus works:

  • To create a Campus profile, enter a college email and graduation year (there additional options to include, too, like major and hometown).

  • Campus profiles are separate from a main Facebook profile, with a dedicated Campus-only News Feed, directory, events, and a private Chat section (separate from Messenger).

  • Facebook Campus is currently only available to students at these schools: Benedict College; Brown University; California Institute of Technology; College of William & Mary; Duke University; Florida International University; Georgia Southern University; Georgia State University; Johns Hopkins University; Lane College; Lincoln University (Pennsylvania); Middlebury College; New Jersey Institute of Technology; Northwestern University; Rice University; Sarah Lawrence College; Scripps College; Smith College; Spelman College; Stephen F Austin State University; Tufts University; University at Albany – State University of New York; University of Hartford; University of Louisville; University of Pennsylvania; University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire; Vassar College; Virginia Tech; Wellesley College; and Wesleyan University.

  • To get started, find the Campus section of the Facebook App.

Why it matters

Facebook Campus is likely an effort to make Facebook more integral to college-aged people. An Edison Research survey indicates that Facebook lost millions since 2017, with the biggest drops in users aged 12 to 34. An Inside Higher Ed study shows that more students are now using Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat than Facebook (luckily for FB, they own Instagram; but still).
