Twitter is Emphasizing Bookmark Engagements as a "Quiet Like"

January 30, 2023

The bookmark feature on Twitter has been a favorite of power users for years: If you see content you want to reference later, you can tap Bookmark to add it to your private library.

The issue was, it can be hard to find the feature: You had to click the “Share” icon and then choose Bookmark. (Not very intuitive.)

In his quest to improve the site, Elon Musk has seized on this as an opportunity. The CEO identified Bookmarks as an underutilized engagement signal that he even sees as a “quiet like” that could eventually impact the public likes count on a Tweet.

Yes, that will be added in an upcoming release. Also, if your tweet is bookmarked, it will be treated as a “quiet like” and increment your likes counter.

The update—reported by Social Media Today and shared by Twitter Support—is rolling out now on iOS. Assuming the feature continues to keep the company’s attention (which seems to be difficult these days) the change should roll out soon on Android and Desktop as well.

Here’s another kicker: According to TechCrunch, those who subscribe to Twitter Blue will also have the ability to organize bookmarks into folders.

Why it Matters

Those who rely on Twitter to engage their audiences may soon have another metric at their disposal. It’s not yet clear exactly how bookmarks will impact public Like counts, but given the increased emphasis, this type of interaction may become more common in the months to come.
