Originally launched in February as a premium feature only available to Snapchat+ subscribers, the My AI chatbot has now been given top billing in Snap’s app for all users.
But some are not very happy about it.
Say hi to My AI, our new chatbot located at the top of your chat. Write a song for your bestie who loves cheese, find the best IYKYK restaurant, or Snap it a photo of your garden to find the perfect recipe. Now free for all Snapchatters. #SnapPartnerSummit pic.twitter.com/U2KdozuWQz

The chatbot uses OpenAI's GPT technology and can perform various tasks like answering questions, offering advice, or planning trips. Additionally, the chatbot can suggest place recommendations from Snap Map and relevant lenses. Users can personalize the chatbot by customizing its Bitmoji avatar, name, and design.
However, Snapchat has received mixed reviews since the wider release of the chatbot. Some users have criticized the app for being unclear about whether the chatbot can access private information like location data (Snapchat later clarified that it cannot access any location data you’re not already sharing), while others were put off that the bot is pinned to the top of the chat menu without the ability to unpin it—unless you’re a premium subscriber.
Snapchat has taken certain measures to ensure the safety of its users. such as programming it to protect against inappropriate or harmful responses. The company is also preparing to incorporate My AI into its in-app parental tools, Family Center, which will allow caregivers to see if their teens are chatting with My AI and how often.
To use My AI, users can simply @ mention the chatbot and ask a question.
Users can also share snaps with the chatbot and receive a chat reply. Soon, Snapchat+ subscribers will be able to snap My AI and get a unique generative snap back that keeps the visual conversation going.
The release of Snapchat's My AI chatbot highlights the growing trend of AI tools being integrated into social media platforms.
While these tools can offer users convenient and engaging experiences, they also raise complex issues and concerns regarding privacy, accuracy, and the potential for bias or harmful content.
As AI technology becomes more ubiquitous, it will be crucial for social media marketers to stay up to date on the latest offerings in order to pivot strategies accordingly.
