Instagram's New Collaborative Posting: What You Need to Know

August 31, 2023

Instagram is shaking things up again, and this time it's all about collaboration.

The platform is testing a new feature that allows users to add their own photos and videos to an existing post. This means that curated group albums and even interactive brand campaigns could now be possible.

This new feature will enable post viewers to submit their own post additions for consideration by the original author.

Recently only an experiment, the feature has now been announced by Meta as a creator a artist-focused feature for Reels. We expect that the feature will be rolling out more widely soon.

Keep in mind that this new feature is different from a “Collab post,” in which a single post features two users as the post's author. That feature—available since 2021—requires upfront collaboration. This new feature allows users to submit additions after the initial publication.

As mentioned by Social Media Today, Instagram has previously experimented with other collaboration features like the "Add Yours" sticker for Stories and the expansion of remixes to all videos in the app. Much of this, of course, has been driven by the popularity of TikTok’s collaboration features such as Duets and Stitches.

How It Works

When the new feature is switched on, viewers can submit their own media to a post for the original creator's approval. Once approved, these additions become part of the original post, creating a collaborative visual experience.

Here’s how you can test this out:

  1. Enable the Feature: Make sure the collaborative posting option is switched on in your settings.

  2. Create a Post: Start with an engaging post that invites collaboration.

  3. Review Submissions: As you get submissions, go through the submitted content and approve the ones that align with your brand or theme.

  4. Monitor Engagement: Keep an eye on how the post performs to understand its impact on your overall strategy.

Why it Matters

This feature could potentially amplify your brand's reach and engagement. By allowing users to contribute to your posts, you're not just creating content; you're creating a community. It's a fresh way to interact with your audience and could give a significant boost to your UGC campaigns.

But, as always, tread carefully. The feature is still in testing, and its impact on feed algorithms is yet to be seen.
