Compartmentalize Your Facebook Life with Multiple Profiles

September 28, 2023

Have you ever felt the need to compartmentalize your Facebook life? Maybe you've got a book club that doesn't need to see your family photos, or perhaps you're a foodie who wants a separate space to rave about the latest gourmet trends.

Well, Facebook has heard you, and they're rolling out a feature that might just be the answer to your digital prayers.

The new Multiple Personal Profiles feature is just that—it allows Facebook users to create multiple profiles.

While the FB app has allowed social media managers the handy shortcut of switching between business and personal profiles for many years, this isn't just about separating "work" and "personal" life. It's about giving users the freedom to craft unique spaces for different aspects of their lives.

According to TechCrunch, this move is all about making users feel "freer" to engage on the platform.

“Each profile will have a unique Feed with relevant content and you can easily switch in between profiles without having to log in.”

Facebook's official statement sheds light on the motivation behind this feature: clearer organization of friends, groups, and interests to make users feel more at ease engaging with their chosen audience. They specifically mention that you can:

  • Show off a different side

  • Connect with certain friends

  • Control who sees your posts

  • Create multiple profiles with the same email login

How to Set Up a New Facebook Profile

  1. Click into your profile menu and look for an option to “Create new profile”

  2. Choose a profile name (it can be changed later)

  3. Connect with people or communities of your choice so each profile has its unique feed.

  4. Switch between profiles with ease under the profile menu (no additional login required).

One small catch: Some features like dating, marketplace, and payments won't be available for these additional profiles initially.

Why it Matters

Facebook has been battling decreasing engagement (and the loss of users to other upstart platforms like TikTok) for many years. But if successful, this change could help make people more likely to login to Facebook more often. Those who have left may be more likely to come back if they have an easy path to curating an experience that fits with their current needs.

However, as Social Media Today points out, while this feature offers more compartmentalization, it might also introduce the challenge of managing multiple profiles and ensuring you're posting in the right space. But hey, with great power comes great responsibility, right?
