How to Use GIFs in Instagram Comments

May 30, 2023

Social media marketers, take note! Instagram has recently introduced a new feature that is set to transform the way users engage with posts and create more interactive conversations.

In a bid to enhance user engagement and add a touch of creativity, Instagram now allows users to add GIFs in comments.

Users can now select from a vast library of animated stickers, GIFs, and emojis to express themselves more dynamically in conversations. This feature builds upon the popularity of GIFs in stories and direct messages, expanding its reach to comments as well.

How It Works

Here’s how to use GIFs in Insta comments:

  1. When commenting on a post, you'll find a new GIF button next to the text input area. Tap on it to access the library of animated stickers and GIFs.

  2. Browse through the available options or use the search bar to find a specific GIF.

  3. Before hitting “Post,” you can add text if desired.

The app is reportedly going to launch toward the end of June. Meanwhile, celebrities and high-profile sports stars are being offered early access to the platform.

Why it Matters

GIFs have slowly become ubiquitous across social media and other apps (like iMessage). Launched as a reply option for Stories in 2020, it’s actually interesting that it took this long to become a feature for Instagram’s main feed posts.

The change provides new possibilities for marketers to capture attention, spark conversations, and amplify their brand's presence on the platform. Just be careful—overuse could easily become an annoyance for many users.
